    • Abstract:
The essay portrays the American Musicological Society's denunciation of the use of music in torture as an act of hypocrisy in light of other practices of the society. He points out what he sees as abusive professional practices towards applicants for fellowships and abusive hazing of students by forcing them to take music survey courses. He notes that the Society of Ethnomusicology published a stronger statement a year earlier which targeted the U.S. military directly.
