      The article discusses the social conditions of Mississippi during the U.S. civil rights movement and examines the role of football in the resistance to the civil rights movement. The role of Mississippi politicians in the state's resistance to the civil rights movement is explored and the resistance to racial integration at the University of Mississippi is described. Details are provided about the riots which took place at the University of Mississippi in 1962 and about the events at a football game a day prior to the riots. A speech given by Mississippi governor Ross Barnett to fans attending the football game is also described.
