From autocratic schoolmasters to democratic teachers. The decline of authoritarianism of Flemish teachers over a half a century (1953-2003). (English)

any views on democratic political culture presuppose the presence of competent citizens in the political system. Schools have the duty to educate children into responsible citizens. Teachers play a key-role in this process. Teachers' attitudes have a distinct impact on the political attitudes of their pupils. Therefore, it is important to know if teachers are favorable to democracy. This article focuses on the evolution in authoritarianism of teachers in Flanders. To this end we use a Belgian sample of 400 primary and secondary school teachers from 1953, as well as a Flemish sample of 486 secondary school teachers from 2002. First we describe the evolution in teachers' attitudes. Further on, we look at components of authoritarianism. Teachers seem to have evolved strongly on a political sub-dimension. The differences are smaller on the 'educational' sub-dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Opvattingen over een democratische politieke cultuur veronderstellen competente burgers. Hierbij neemt men aan dat scholen en leraren kinderen dienen op te voeden tot verantwoordelijke burgers. Voorgaand onderzoek wees immers uit dat de attitudes van leraren een invloed hebben op de politiek relevante attitudes van hun leerlingen. Bijgevolg is het niet onbelangrijk te weten of leraren positief staan tegenover democratie. De huidige bijdrage richt zich op de evolutie van het autoritarisme bij leraren in Vlaanderen. We zullen daartoe gebruik maken van data die in 1953 werd verzameld bij 400 Belgische leerkrachten uit het basis- en secundair onderwijs, alsook van data die in 2002 werd verzameld bij 486 Vlaamse leerkrachten uit het secundair onderwijs. In de eerste plaats beschrijven we de evolutie van de attitudes van de leraren. Vervolgens kijken we iets meer in detail naar de componenten van autoritarisme. Leraren zijn sterk geëvolueerd op een politieke subdimensie van het autoritarisme. De verschillen zijn veel bescheidener als het gaat om "opvoedkundig autoritarisme". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
