- Abstract:
The article discusses the environmental health risks associated with development of oil sands in the petroleum industry. It notes the industry's interest in the large oil sand deposits in Alberta, Canada. Bitumen, the carbon source in oil sands, contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals. Byproducts of bitumen processing are collected in tailings ponds which represent the main source of concern with respect to environmental contamination. Several researchers are cited regarding potential drinking water contamination and associated effects such as cholangiocarcinoma. INSET: Can Nanotechnology Make Oil Sands Development Greener?.
