    • Abstract:
The article describes arctic biologist Kristin Laidre's efforts to study the narwhal. Laidre's career is described, noting that she began her adult life as a professional ballerina with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and became a biologist after suffering a foot injury. Narwhals are also described, mentioning that they are cetaceans found only in the Greenlandic and Canadian Arctic and that they are most often characterized by the presence of a large single tooth often likened to the horn of a unicorn.
