- Abstract:
Chapter 18 of the book "Black Women's Intellectual Traditions: Speaking Their Minds," edited by Kristin Waters and Carol B. Conaway is presented. It presents Maria Stewart's challenge to the Black women in the 19th century to use their special roles as mothers in forging powerful mechanisms of political action. The politics of suppression is suggested as a reason for the isolation and obscurity of these black women intellectual traditions. It suggests for the development of black feminist thought to include those not considered as intellectuals.
