- Abstract:
This article presents an exploration of the meanings contained in, and the reading strategies associated with, Anna's real journey from a coastal city to Bloemfontein. The discussion focuses on the presentation of her journey as a life history and consequently as a life journey (Lakoff & Johnson 1980: Fletcher 1982). A multitude of paedophilic events involving her stepfather characterise her journey, which allows for an application to the story of Kübler-Ross's (1969) distinction of five phases of death and dying and Weitzman's (2003) distinction of three phases of grieving. The discussion additionally focuses on the postmodern nature of tile story of Anna's life, with references to the statement on the front cover page that the book is "[b]ased on a true story", parodic literary devices, aspects of historiographic metafiction, and appending Sharon Lewis's essay titled "On child abuse" to the text. The analysis concludes that the appeal and merit of It's me, Anna relate, among others, to the fact that the story is understandable to most readers, despite the complexities popularly associated with postmodern writing.
