Abstract: Crnjanski arrived in Kvarner (ital. Abbazia) - out of defiance. Enthused with the elite life in Opatia, instead of going to study Art in Munich or Rome, and mother's wish to send him in Vienna, he chose Trade Academy in Rijeka (ital. Fiume). It seemed to him like an ideal solution. He thought he would gain his personal independence that way. That yearlong episode from Rijeka was one of the most interesting and probably most decisive in his life. He frequented this place, coming from front line, and in 1965, Rijeka was the first place he arrived at after the emigration period. First couple of days he spent in Opatia where the fencing tournament was very popular. Latter he went to Rijeka. He settled in a famous guest house, near the theater and market (Zagrebačka ulica). At the Academy he met Zubranić (most probably Čubranić), the son of a baker from Baška (the island Krk ital. Veglia, lat. Curicum). There he used to sail, visit surrounding places…Thanks to Zubranić he was introduced to Rijeka's high society, where he met the daughter of the local mayor - Francesco Via. Under these influences he wrote poem Jadranu and some time latter famous poem Pod Krkom. This area between the towns Baška, Senj and Prvić generated for centuries same feelings, same destinies and produced people with the same life rolls. This area, this stormy strait, where wretched mariner (according to legend), cursed by his fiancée because of his infidelity, keeps rowing but can not reach the coast. This is the place of secrets and infinity. This is the area, genius loci, where Vejske legende (early Croatian myth), rich with the string of motives latter found in Crnjanski's poetry, were written. That is where we were, like shadows, passing thorough reality, not aware of anything else. One can ask a logical question: how much is this approach - of analyzing bits of context - justified? Crnjanski acknowledged this himself - he used to write comments after the poems, explaining the context, since context is not unimportant. In this way he was explaining his intensions. Gojko Tešić wrote: "All Crnjanski's comments practically form a special type of novel on Lirika Itake and Dnevnik o Čarnojeviću - and that is why these comments should be understood as integral part of these works. These comments cast the light on time context, explain creative technique in Crnjanski's poetical workshop, and talk about the destiny of a poet in tragic wartime."
