The process of creating Czech transcriptions of ethnical terminology of Native Americans and the Czech American studies. (English)

The ethnical terminology of Native Americans went through a certain development in the Czech milieu, a development that partly reflected not only the momentary situation and the goals of the Czech American studies – either popularization or scientific research – but also other external causes. An indisputable turning point represented the year 1972, when Zdenek Salzmann issued in the journal Nase rec (our language), published by the Institute of Czech Language of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, his article Contribution to the creation of Czech transcriptions of Indian names. In this text, he set the norms for Czech transcriptions of "tribal, language or dialect and classification names" of Native Americans north of Mexico. Through his Contribution Salzmann had spirited up the Czech American studies that were consciously suppressed and isolated in the period of "normalization" after the occupation of Czechoslovakia. Rules set by Salzmann were directly applied by the Orientalist Dusan Zbavitel in his translation of the book by Dee Brown, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Prague 1976. Results of the subsequent discussion reflected in the encyclopaedia directed by Vaclav Hubinger, Narody celeho sveta (Nations of All the World), published in 1985, that codified the phonetic transcriptions. Favorable responses to popularizing literature have confirmed the rightfulness of creating Czech versions of orthography as well as morphology.
