An essay is presented on the intellectual history of the contents and characteristics of the first four Hawaiian-language newspapers including "Ka Lama Hawaii (1843)" and "Ka Nonanona (1784-1846)." It states that the newspapers provide a distinctively Hawaiian intellectual tradition in writing. It also identifies the Native Hawaiian writers and describes the kinds of writing they engaged in.
