The article discusses the failure of the U.S. health care and immigration systems to provide adequate care to immigrants, uninsured migrants and people detained for deportation. The U.S. health system is managed by individual states and does not provide reimbursement for universal care. Some hospitals are trying to return sick immigrants to their homelands to avoid the financial consequences of treating them, a practice called "medical rendition." The author claims that physicians who work with immigrants and health and human rights advocates are depending on immigration and health care reform to solve the problems. They are encouraging U.S. President Barack Obama to address it.
