- Abstract:
The article discusses U.S. Air Force research into making liquid jet fuel from coal. It discusses applicable conversion processes, e.g., coal gasification, Fischer-Tropsch catalysis, and coal-to-liquids plants (CTL). The article also focuses on the disadvantage that coal-derived fuel generates more carbon dioxide than that associated with petroleum-based jet fuel. Section 526 of a 2007 energy bill prohibits expenditure of tax funds on fuels that emit more carbon than fuels already in use.
