    • Abstract:
      French and Canadian cartographers were the first to choose the town as a feature of thematic mapping. During the Soviet rule the mapping of town features was banned by censorship . Despite this, there were several attempts to map town features, also in Riga. Currently, the Department of Geomatics of RigaTechnical University is working on a project aimed at developing an electronic system of thematic mapping of Riga. The study of the existing web pages showed that the number of maps of Riga available on the Internet is not sufficient and that the quality of many maps do not meet the requirements of the present time. Therefore, it is, firstly, necessary to reach agreement with the city council on the essential aspects of mapping. Secondly, it is necessary to develop a system of parameters for characterizing each of the aspects. Thirdly, it is necessary to agree on how detailed the chosen parameters should be. Lastly, it is important to offer a user-friendly system of symbols - easy to understand and memorize. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

      Pilsētu kā tematiskās kartēšanas objektu pirmie izvēlējās franči un kanādieši. PSRS laikā šādus darbus atklāti veikt neatļāva cenzūra, lai gan bija vairāki mēģinājumi, arī Rīgā. Rīgas Tehniskās universitātes Ģeomātikas katedrā izstrādā projektu Rīgas tematiskās kartēšanas elektroniskās sistēmas izveidošanai. Patreizējo interneta lapu izpēte parādīja, ka internetā Rīgas karšu skaits ir nepietiekams un ka karšu kvalitāte bieži neatbilst mūsdienu prasībām. Tāpēc, vispirms jāvienojas ar pilsētas vadību par nepieciešamajiem kartēšanas aspektiem. Otrkārt, jāizstrādā katru aspektu raksturojošo parametru sistēma. Treškārt, jābūt saskaņotai parametru detalizācijas pakāpei. Un, visbeidzot, jāpiedāvā tāda simbolu sistēma, kas būtu viegli uztverama, saprotama un ātri iegaumējama karšu lietotājiem.
