      An encyclopedia entry for the "Dead Sea Scrolls" is presented. The scrolls are believed by many scholars to have been written by a sect known as the Essenes. The sect forms a definite link between Judaism and Christianity, with scholars suggesting that Jesus was a member of the Qumran group. Author Herschel Shanks disagrees that the scrolls contain data that foreshadows Christian teaching, saying that Jesus is not in the scrolls. Another scholar cautioned against taking an unidentified flying object (UFO) viewpoint of the scrolls.
