- Abstract: As an instrumentalist Mozart is primarily remembered as a keyboard virtuoso. But he was also a gifted violinist, taught by his father, Leopold, who published an influential violin instruction book. The younger Mozart served as a court violinist and then concertmaster in Salzburg and wrote five violin concertos (thought to be for his own use) in his early 20s. On Tuesday at Avery Fisher Hall, Lorin Maazel (who is also a violinist) led a performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 (''Turkish'') with the young German violinist Julia Fischer as the excellent soloist. Ms. Fischer is an accomplished pianist as well; she made her professional debut on that instrument in January, playing Grieg's Concerto at the Alte Oper Frankfurt during a concert in which she also performed Saint-Saens's Violin Concerto No. 3.
