      The article profiles Thomas Hiärne, the author of the book "The History of Estonia, Livonia and Latvia." He was born in 1638 on the second marriage of his pastor father Erland Hiärne in Ingermanland, Russia. He was fluent in several foreign languages including Swedish, German, Finnish and Russian. He studied logic, rhetoric, poetry as well as Latin at a trivial school in Nyen. In his early age, he was known to have great interest in history, thus leading him to study the family history of Bengt Horn. Information about the background of his literary works is also provided.
