      The article discusses the process of migration and resettlement of vast masses of Caucasian population to the Ottoman Empire known in history as the mahajir phenomenon. The paper presents a historical background of the mahajir phenomenon, including information on how the process of migration and resettlement started. According to the report, the event was raised by the Caucasian War of 1817-1864, the way the czarist administration treated the peoples of the Northwestern Caucasus, and the policies pursued by the Porte.
