    • Abstract:
Over the past quarter of a century, cities in China have undergone fundamental changes. On the one hand, Chinese cities have been liberated from the stagnation under the orthodox Communist command economy and thus begun to manifest unprecedented growth and expansion; on the other hand, the speed and scale of urban growth have led to alarming tensions, conflicts, and social polarization. These problems can be seen as symptoms of more fundamental changes in economic and political structures on both domestic and international levels with which the strategies of development taken by the state have been shaped. In another word, under the influence of economic restructuring and due to the cultural and financial impact of global forces, the state has shifted from the Communist ideology to form a "progrowth coalition" with capital interests, but maintained the core Communist mechanisms of administration, which work as the potent force for urban transformation. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
