- Abstract:
The author reflects on the Russian invasion of Georgia in August of 2008. He argues that the breakup of the Soviet Union and the consolidation of power by former intelligence officer Vladimir Putin will inevitably lead to violence. The author also comments on weakening U.S. leadership in the region, and cites the difficulties ahead for countries such as Ukraine and Georgia to enter the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
