    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the significance of encryption tools in laptops and mobile devices in the U.S. A survey shows that only about 30% of these devices used at 24 federal agencies had encryption tools as of September 2007. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) found various implementation shortcomings in six agencies including configuration errors, lack of training and insufficient monitoring of used encryption tool. In 2006, the White House Office of Management and Budget recommended that agencies should encrypt all data stored on mobile systems. However, GAO notes that some agencies were unsure of its applicability.
