    • Abstract:
The article discusses the collaboration of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) with the National Science Foundation (NSF) for national security research. DOD hopes to spend $20 million this year on social science research wherein part on the money will be moved through the NSF's acclaimed merit-review process in an attempt to attract the best scientists. This broadens a DOD initiative launched in June 2008 that aims to bring academic social scientists into the defense research fold. The program will be managed by Defense officials and by NSF. Some concerns from social scientist regarding the involvement of NSF in the project are presented. It further notes that the Pentagon's involvement in the social sciences could reach beyond areas of interest to the military.
