- Abstract:
The article discusses how neurons die. Scientists have been unable to find the exact causes of a variety of diseases affecting the brain, in humans and animals, including Alzheimer's and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), in cattle. The common thread is thought to be the aggregation of adverse proteins called amyloid-beta (A-beta). Topics include the debate over A-beta's role in the killing of neurons, comments from several neuroscientists, and detailed analysis of neuron function.
