The article reports on a study about autistic individuals that belong to consanguineous families, families in which there are marriages between cousins. It focuses on searching for genes that are connected with increased risk of autism. The study used a technique called homozygosity mapping in order to identify disease-causing inherited mutations in consanguineous families. It also examined the genomes in these families with autistic children for anomalies in their structural chromosomes, such as deletions and duplications.
