- Abstract:
The article discusses the style used by Charlotte Salomon in "Life? or Theatre?," her autobiographical story. It mentions the allusions used by Salomon such as the painting "The Creation of Adam," by Michelangelo. According to the author, Salomon combines words and images in accordance with the livre d'artiste style of the early 20th century form used by other prominent artists such as Picasso and Baudelaire. He also compared "Life? or Theatre?" to other forms of art such as comic books, like the works of Art Spiegelman, because of the use of dialogue bubbles. Furthermore, he looks on Salomon's use of words to show tension or enhance visual effect of the drawings. On the contrary, Salomon also used silences, as a style to depict intense feelings of the characters in her story.
