- Abstract: An essay is presented on theologian Gerhard von Rad's interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy and his struggles to defend the Old Testament in Nazi Germany. It offers the history of the country from 1933-1945 on the division of the Protestant Church and the Friederich Schiller University of Jena entanglement to national socialism. The author considered several reasons why von Rad regarded Deuteronomy as a sermon, such as the Old Testament is a Christian Scripture and witness to Christ.
