    • Abstract:
This article discusses the impact of corn ethanol production on nitrogen runoff in the United States. Simon Donner, an assistant geography professor at the University of British Colombia and Chris Kucharik at the University of Wisconsin modeled nitrogen inputs and the impact on oxygen dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico. Their research is published in the March 18, 2008 issue of the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences." Also, Patrick Mulholland, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory used nitrogen isotopes to show how increased nitrogen runoff into streams overwhelms their denitrification function.
