      The article explores the beauty and mystery that surrounded the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. The monuments found in the city are carved out of solid rock which offer panoramic vistas and tremendous sense of the past. Although it has disappeared from the historical record after A.D. 636, the city continued for centuries to be the home of Bedouin tribes. Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt has rediscovered the city on August 22, 1812.
