    • Abstract:
The article discusses the development and management of nontraditional waste management facilities, including food waste composting operations. Such sites can attract large gull and other bird species which pose risks to aviation traffic. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines indicating the minimum distance allowed from an airport to putrescible waste landfills are given. Topics include the nuisance and economic liability associated with roof-nesting gulls as well as the bacteria carried by birds. Also discussed is water quality near such waste facilities.
