The article examines the effectiveness with which employees in a large firm obtain needed information. Academic researchers studied a consulting firm with offices in 50 countries. About 100 consultants were chosen at random, who for each of four topics were asked to identify either the firm expert, or somebody who knew who that expert might be. Results indicated that new hires, employees not well-situated within the company's social network, and women were the least efficient at locating the sought-after expertise.
