    • Abstract:
The article reports that federal agencies have bought 800,000 licenses for encryption software through the fedral Data at Rest Encryption (DAR) program, jointly run by the U.S. General Services Administration and Department of Defense. It relates that numerous news headlines of computer and laptop security breaches and theft have caused the rapid adoption of encryption software. According to Robert Lentz, deputy assistant secretary for Information and Identity Assurance at the Defense Department, the DAR program that offers encryption software from 10 vendors is one of the cornerstones of security assurance in the government. Moreover, it cites hybrid packages which offer full disk and file folder encryption as the most popular products of the program.
