    • Abstract:
A general model for the molecular structure of biological membranes has been developed. In this model, the protein molecules form a two-dimensional lattice two molecules thick, while the phospholipids and cholesterol fill the interstices between the proteins as lipid bilayer. This understanding of the fundamental molecular geometry of membranes has made possible the elucidation of a wide variety of membrane phenomena in a self-consistent manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
