    • Abstract:
An encyclopedia entry for maternal mortality and morbidity is presented. In 1995, around 585,000 women are estimated to die each year in pregnancy and childbirth. According to the World Health Organization, maternal mortality refers to a death during or within forty-two days of a pregnancy from causes related to or aggravated by the pregnancy. Factors include haemorrhage, infection and unskilled abortion. Maternal risk can be reduced through family planning and obstetric care combined with poverty alleviation.
