    • Abstract:
The article focuses on the growing acceptance for American elms despite their proneness to Dutch elm disease. The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has chosen the Princeton American elm for the White House lawn. NPS director Jim Sherald said that the American elm is adaptable, hard, and has connections to American history. It states that scientific confirmation of resistance to Dutch elm disease among some pure American elms gave the NPS several to choose from. The Princeton's tall and fast-growing form made it the logical choice. Since their planting in the spring of 2005, the trees have grown about an inch in diameter and around 20 feet high. Garden-center customers and corporate and city landscapers are finding the Princeton American elm attractive.
