    • Abstract:
The article presents an exploration into the history and spread of torture practices within the 20th century, particularly by those methods used by democratic nations. The history of torture as a means of interrogation by democracies is given, citing the United States, Great Britain, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Ancient Greece. The innovation of torture techniques by democracies is particularly discussed, highlighting their involvement in "clean" methods which do not permanently scar the victims. Questions regarding the psychological pathology of torture are also explored. The author suggests that in order to prevent torture, nations must also admit to its use in history.
