The article focuses on the preservation of the Varanasi ghats at Ganges River in Benares, India. Ghats are defined as the steps located at the edge of the river that serve as place for bathing and religious ceremonies. The conservation project of these ghats was spearheaded by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
