Before the sixties, the French government did not show any interest in promoting sports in the French West Indies. In fact, sports were firstly promoted by a small native group. Who are they? Which qualities do they look for and find in sports? Which benefits—whether social or symbolic—do they draw from them? This paper presents the relation between the belief in the virtues of sport and the search for identity. Thus, our goal is to examine the importance of the "sporting spirit" in the assimilation process, in relation to the metropolis. The desire to be recognized, the wish to prove an equality, the need to belong to a community—even if it is far away, from a geographic and cultural point of view—are at the heart of a quest, evident in first part of the XX century in Guadeloupe and Martinique. This work is mainly based on the analysis of sports magazines and newspapers articles, as well as biographic approach, in order to outline the sportsman's profile. The ambition in drawing some common characteristics of sport development in the French West Indies, is also to allow a comparative study with other Caribbean countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En las Antillas francesas, el gobierno frances no manifestó gran interés en promover los deportes antes de los años Sesenta. Así pues, al principio Ia promoción del deporte estuvo en manos de un pequeño grupo. ¿De quién se trata? ¿Qué virtudes y beneficios tiene para ellos el deporte? ¿Qué intereses tienen? En este artículo analizaremos Ia relación entre el deporte y la búsqueda de identidad y examinaremos Ia importancia de Ia difusión del "espíritu deportista" en el proceso de asimilación de estas islas con respecto a Ia metrópolis. El deseo de reconocimiento, el ideal de igualdad y Ia voluntad de integración a una comunidad, aunque éstas se encuentren lejos geográfica y culturalmente, motivan el proceso de búsqueda que las caracteriza durante la primera parte del siglo veinte en Guadalupe y Martinica. Mediante el análisis de revistas de deportes y de la prensa, así como de una investigación biográfica, este estudio intenta presentar las características básicas del deportista. Nuestra intención es esbozar el proceso de desarrollo del deporte en el Caribe francés y, a Ia vez, proponer un acercamiento comparativo con respecto a los demás países del Caribe. Dans les îles françaises de Ia Caraïbe, l'implantation d'activités sportives ne fait pas l'objet d'une volonté affirmée de I'Etat avant les années 1960. La promotion du sport est assurée dans un premier temps par des relais locaux. Queis sont ces promoteurs? Quelles vertus trouvent-ils dans Ia pratique sportive? Quels sont les profits sociaux, symboliques associés à cette diffusion? L'objet de cette communication est de mettre en relation Ia croyance dans les bienfaits du sport et Ia recherche de reconnaissance. Autrement dit d'examiner ie rôle joué par Ia diffusion d'un «esprit sportif» dans un processus d'assimilation. La volonté d'être considéré comme semblable, le souci de prouver une égalité, le désir d'être intégré dans un ensemble national —pourtant distant géographiquement et cuitureliement— sont au centre d'une quête, lisible dans ie phénomène sportif dans Ia première partie du XXème siècle en Guadeloupe et en Martinique. Cette étude s'appuie principalement sur une analyse des revues spécialisées ou généralistes et à l'aide d'une approche biographique tente de tracer un archétype du pratiquant. L'ambition de cette communication est de tracer quelques grandes iignes caractéristiques du développement du sport dans ies îies françaises permettant une approche comparative avec les autres pays de la Caraïbe.
