    • Abstract:
The article discusses gardening in the northeast U.S. In this part of the country clay is heavy and does not drain well, but it can be improved by mixing compost or sphagnum peat into the soil. This will help plant roots penetrate deeper so they find water and nutrients. In case there is bedrock near the surface, gardeners should consider building raised beds instead.
