    • Abstract:
The article discusses the struggle between the Turkish Army and separatist Kurdish guerrillas. The suspected Kurds who supported the guerrillas were confined and tortured, and whole villages were emptied and sometimes burned because residents declined in joining the government militia. A group called the "contra guerrillas" targeted the Kurdish activists and about one hundred people were murdered by unknown aggressors. Abdullah Ocalan, the Marxist-Leninist leader of the Marxist-Leninist Kurdistan Workers party (PKK), said that the Kurds wanted a full independence for the economically undeveloped Kurdish area. But according to the pro-PKK Kurdish activists, they are demanding for an end to the state of emergency and military abuses.
