    • Abstract:
The article discusses two books related to films, "French New Wave," by Jean Douchet and "Truffaut," by Antoine de Baecque and Serge Toubiana. Though some critics have described the book as "workman like," it offers up a fascinatingly full account of filmmaker Francois Truffaut's life. From this raw material one can reconstruct Truffaut's political and artistic trajectory and show how important the Nazi occupation, postwar Gaullism and the vigorously Stalinist and nationalist French Communist Party were in shaping his and the New Wave's politics and aesthetics.
