The article discusses reported social conditions for patients and personnel and their interactions in an Austrian mental hospital. The basis of the research was the patient histories recorded by hospital personnel. Patients were evaluated on their social position assumed and their relative places and/or responsibilities in the institutional hierarchy based on resources available to them and determined from the history records.
