Stax had been founded 10 years earlier, but was by 1967 at the peak of its power producing hit songs like "The Letter," by the Box Tops and "Soul Man," by Sam and Dave. The article discusses the social conditions and racial discord in Memphis in 1967. Also discussed is the sudden plane crash death of Stax artist Otis Redding on December 10, 1967.
