Costs of Stewarding Ecological Goods and Services Need to be Shared. (English)

This article focuses on a balance between economic benefits from the forest and public policies designed to protect biodiversity. There are many situations where private landowners are asked to provide public ecological benefits while individually bearing the costs. An example is requesting landowners to leave large buffers around streams to improve the quality of drinking water. The author suggests that these ecological benefits are often referred to as ecological goods and services, and the costs of protecting them are currently not being borne fairly.
