The article presents a pilot study of racial profiling and the legal and political treatment of the issue. A particular focus is on traffic stops in Texas and the collection of data related to police decision making. A Texas state law known as Senate Bill 1074 is described for its efforts to combat racial profiling. The pilot study seeks to standardize data collection of racial profiling data from Texas police departments. The topic of proportionality is discussed as a method for evaluating racial profiling. A list of states with laws requiring the collection of traffic stop demographics is given.
