      The article offers a look at the failure of democratization in central and eastern European countries exemplified by former communists taking leadership roles and by the lingering economic problems still affecting the people. Ten years since 1989 of democratic upheavals against the Soviet Union and communism, communist parties and communists have reclaimed political power and economic dominance. Everywhere in central and eastern Europe, these former communists-turned-democratic leaders have bastardized not only liberty, but also the democratic ideals of rule of law, privatization, nation- and state-building.
