The article focuses on the authors' views on the use of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. The authors say that COX-2 inhibitors, which were meant to deflect the gastrointestinal complications common to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, have shown serious adverse cardiovascular events. They suggest that apart from lacking the antiplatelet effects of aspirin, COX-2 inhibitors also impair one of the primary safeguards of the endothelium against platelet aggregation and atherosclerosis.
