      The article discusses the author's experience of observing an ice road in Canada's Northwest Territories. He relates the basic mechanics of ice roads and discusses how crews drive along the road and measure the ice-thickness so that vehicles can pass by without any danger of the ice breaking. He further reports on the importance of the road that has rich deposits of diamond-breaking kimberlite.
