    • Abstract:
The article discusses Martin Luther's "95 Theses," a document that challenged certain practices of the Roman Catholic Church, notably the sale of indulgences. The document challenged not only the practice of collecting money in exchange for the forgiveness of sins, but also the authority of the pope to do so. He launched the Reformation, which divided the Christian church in Western Europe between the Catholic Church and a variety of churches that practiced Christianity but did not recognize the authority of the pope.
