    • Abstract:
The article offers information on the studies conducted in the U.S. by two research groups that collected data from 100,000 disk drives and examined drive failures. The study from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania got its statistics from a wide range of sites such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and various Internet service providers. The other study analyzed data from Google Inc.'s automated system for tracking drive performances. Carnegie Mellon asserted that redundant arrays of independent disks are not a guarantee against information storage tragedies.
