The article focuses on the issues of poverty and employment in California's San Joaquin Valley. The disparity between the booming farming industry and poor immigrant population is discussed. Tighter border patrols have transformed the local labour market. More immigrants are turning from seasonal farm work to more dependable, year-round work. The author concludes the casual workforce that was a boon to the valley's traditional agricultural economy will be less helpful in the emerging one.
