      Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is one of the major factors known to trigger cutaneous disease activity in (systemic) lupus erythematosus patients. UV light, UVB in particular, is a potent inducer of apoptosis. Currently, disturbed clearance of apoptotic cells is one of the concepts explaining the development of inflammation in lupus patients. We review the role of apoptotic cells and autoantibodies in the pathogenesis of UVB induced skin lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
